Desi Beauty and NFTs: Urban Desi Women Creates Beautiful NFTs that Give Back

Urban Desi Women, an NFT project that focuses on supporting and empowering women globally, displays a unique and diverse collection of Desi feminine beauties and challenges the traditional beauty standards. As the first Indian Women-led project in the NFT space with as many as 10,000 unique NFTs, the goal is to connect like-minded women and build a strong movement to celebrate feminine power.

This initiative was created by Presilla Sadhoe, a proud mother of Indian and Surinamese descent and the first Dutch woman to launch 10,000 NFTs. There are many stereotypes which we face on a daily basis, both in the western society and in our own cultural community. We want to associate with more such women who focus on breaking barriers and stereotypes & build a strong interpersonal community to support each other and grow worldwide.

Celebrating Beauty while Challenging Norms

Unfortunately, India portrayed by the international media doesn’t have the best reputation. Acid attacks, sexual harassment, domestic violence and other forms of oppression overlook the actual representation of India. While India is a vast country with a deep-rooted sense of culture, a spiritual hub, and a thousand years of history, worship of the feminine has endured.

With this project, UDW celebrates the diversity and strength of femininity worldwide, while raising awareness and challenging traditional societal norms. To reinforce this, 10% of all primary sales from the project are donated to the Chhanv Foundation, an NGO helping acid attack survivors in India to overcome their trauma reintegrate them into society. Though the cultural and social stigma surrounding these incidents alienates them from society, the necessary help can enable survivors to start a new life.

One of the main goals of UDW is to influence and enrich the public debate about the position of Indian women. It's about protecting and promoting every woman's freedom to be who she wants to be, without living in fear of being rejected or even attacked.

Desi Beauty Belongs in Web 3.0

Just as every woman is beautiful in her own way, this collection features inspiring, rare, and exotic forms of Indian beauty captured in no less than 10,000 NFTs. This turns into an exhibition of diverse skin colors, hairstyles, make-up styles, features, and clothing. From simple depictions to unique traits such as skin colors of women with vitiligo and the portrayal of traditional jewelry, bindi, and sindoor. Recognition, acceptance and appreciation for India's spiritual and cultural heritage is what it's about.

An NFT is a “Non-Fungible Token”: a unique file that is stored in a digital cash book, also called a blockchain. Users can buy, own and trade these types of files. Some NFTs only serve as digital art, but there are also NFTs that offer special perks such as exclusive access to websites or participation in an event.

For example, all UDW NFT holders have exclusive access to monthly masterclasses in topics such as individual development, mindset, awareness and personal success. One UDW holder will also be given an opportunity to visit India and be invited to the Stop Acid Attacks Foundation.

Web 3.0 has the power to positively impact society. We have just begun our journey towards this -- join us to bring change!
